My Picture Nursery

Welcome to the nursery! Shhh....puppies sleeping.

One of the most frequent questions I get is, "what do they look like newborn? Like little mice?" For hygiene and health reasons newborns are never shown to visitors but here are a few pictures to satisfy your curiosity. Surprise! They actually look like tiny, little dogs. When possible I have tried to show the same pup in it's older puppy state. The average size of the Pom at birth is 2-3 oz. But 1 oz. for a preemie and right up to 5 oz. for a singleton (only pup in litter) is certainly not unheard of. Litter size is variable, 1-4 pups is common with 2 being the norm. Even a good sized, healthy and happy bitch has a 1 in 4 chance of having a C-section. The C-section is major surgery - with a major price tag and major convalesance nursing involved. Certainly with the newer gaseous anesthetics it may be undertaken with confidence but it is always nerve wracking. Just ask me! I am present in the room for each and every surgical delivery that any of my girls must undergo. I have a few white hairs to testify to this. So does my husband. But hey, he cheats and looks away, but only, for the first incision.

sunbath.gif 1. These little girls were less than 2 weeks of age at their photo session. But time passes for all of us and they are young adults now. The bigger girl, "Dolly", (Kirkfels Sparkles) is expecting her first litter late March of 1998. "Candy" (Kirkfels City Lights) the smaller one is awaiting her husband-to-be.
tiffany.gif 2. This picture shows the same pups at 21 days and with their eyes open. In a Tiffany (just try and find one of those containers in Aust!) bag because they are priceless!
parti1.gif 3. This is not a terrific picture. But if you look very carefully, you will see an ice white pup and her White and Chocolate litter mate. These 2 girls are 48 hours old. Still, the good tail set of the Pom is evident on the white bitch pup. You may see my blue-eyed Peke looking rather curiously at the babes.
parti2.gif 4. Parti colour female with a nice blaze. Because Australia is judged under the English Standard, the parti pups must have exact colouring to be in the ring.
parti3.gif 5. Litter sister of the above pup. Another Parti showing a good blaze and even patching.
preemie1.gif 6. This tiny pup (pictured hand nursing at 3 weeks) was a preemie and one of 3 survivors. If you want to read their story see "Diary of a Near Disaster" on my homepage. She is still small and a lovely red. Her name is Pepper and she is spoiled rotten. She does suffer from separation anxiety and although very small, she still lets me know when she needs me; which unfortunately is most of the time. The Tellington Touch has been a big help to us both in calming her fears..
preemie2.gif 7. Pepper again, once her eyes had opened. Believe it or not she is 4 weeks old here.
preemie3.gif 8. Pepper and her litter brother.
preemie4.gif 9. The third preemie pup, who now lives happily in the USA.
worm1.gif 10. A white pup (Snowy) who grew up to be the little bitch below.
worm.gif 11. Here is my sweet Snowy at 5 months. She has been happy working for professional trainers to show that Poms are smart AND pretty.

You can speak up now. The tour is over!
