The subtitle of this book "Humans And Their Animal Companions" says it all. Dr. Newby manages to tell the tale of man's evolving dependance on the dog with compassion and humour. Her writing style gives the feeling of discussing a favorite subject with one's scholarly sister.
The early chapters deal with the origin of mankind's and the wild dogs's codependance, the evolution of the dog as we know it today and some fascinating snippets on how society has viewed the canine in past history. Although the book concentrates mostly on the dog; cats, horses and other animals are discussed.
In chapter 5, "Cultural Exchange: Talking With the animals," Dr. Newby tells how little the body language of today's dog has in common with it's wolf anscestors. A human - animal language is shown to have evolved as a trend "to greater socialbility." Perhaps your dog understands you better than you think!
Dr. Newby tells us that even though most of us spend our day "wading through a sea of people", our intimate contacts are actually dropping. We are a social species but many people live in isolation, especially the elderly. Pet keeping is not only an antidote for loneliness but has been scientifically shown to promote health and a feeling of well being. Want to lower your blood pressure? Pat your four legged friend.
The bittersweet recounting of the death of a well respected man comforted by Sandy, his Golden Retriver, may bring a tear or two. Sandy was entered into the hospital's visitors book as his 'niece' by the understanding staff. She helped her master accept his 'final loneliness' and comforted him to the end. How lucky this man was to die the "good death."
The final chapters deal with urban life, it's problems and how we need to adapt our thinking as a pet keeping species. Dr. Newby comes up with some humane and novel ideas for the town and city planners. Our experts in these areas should not JUST ask themselves "would I want my grandmother to live in it?" but "would I want my dog to live in it?" If you are a collector of animal related literature, this book belongs in your personal library. It's a gem!!
